Updated species names
As more genomic data becomes available for clinically-important fungi, our understanding of how these species relate to one another periodically needs to be updated. Species name changes are often unpopular with clinicians and can lead to confusion.
MRCM has started using updated names for various species (see table below) but we will include both names on our test reports to minimise confusion. Infections caused by yeasts previously included in the genus Candida will continue to be called candidiasis for the sake of practicality.
Old name | New name |
Candida glabrata | Nakaseomyces glabrata |
Candida krusei | Pichia kudriavzevii |
Saphrochaete clavata | Magnusiomyces clavatus |
